"Timidity Would Have Blocked Reforms": APC Chieftain Defends Tinubu's Bold Policy Moves

By IGBENEWS Editorial

Abuja, Nigeria — In a spirited defense of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Biodun Ajiboye, has stated that the President’s reform agenda demonstrates a fearless leadership style necessary for Nigeria’s transformation.

Ajiboye, speaking on channelsnews with Seun Okinbaloye, argued that only a leader with strong resolve could undertake the sweeping changes currently being implemented by the federal government.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

“If Bola Tinubu was a kind of person that is timid, he would not undertake most of the reforms he’s undertaking,” Ajiboye asserted. “These are not decisions for the faint-hearted.”

The Context of the Statement

Ajiboye’s comments come amid ongoing national debates on several of Tinubu’s key policies, which have elicited both praise and criticism. Among the most prominent are:

· The removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023, which led to a significant increase in fuel prices and living costs.

· The unification of the foreign exchange windows, resulting in a substantial devaluation of the naira in an attempt to stabilize the currency market.

· The proposed removal of electricity subsidies and ongoing power sector reforms.

· Tax reforms and the push to increase government revenue amid high debt and fiscal challenges.

These policies, though aligned with recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, have contributed to rising inflation and economic hardship for many Nigerians in the short term.

Ajiboye’s Justification of “Non-Timid” Leadership

Ajiboye contended that previous administrations avoided these difficult decisions due to political fear.

“For years, successive governments treated these issues like a can that must be kicked down the road,” he said. “President Tinubu has chosen to open that can, confront the problems head-on, and endure the temporary pain for long-term gain. That is the mark of a courageous leader, not a timid one.”

He likened the situation to a necessary surgical procedure. “When a surgeon knows an operation will hurt but is needed to save a life, he does not walk away out of fear. That is what the President is doing—saving Nigeria’s economic life.”

Mixed Reactions from Analysts and Public

Economic analysts are divided on the assessment.

Dr. Ifeoma Okonkwo, an economist at the University of Abuja, agrees with the premise of boldness but urges caution. “Boldness is a necessary ingredient for reform, but it must be matched with precision, timing, and robust palliative measures to cushion the impact on the most vulnerable. The courage to remove subsidies must be paired with the wisdom to manage the consequences.”

Public reaction has been sharply polarized. Supporters of the administration applaud the political will to break what they call “a cycle of economic sabotage.” Critics, however, argue that the reforms have been rushed and are exacerbating poverty.

“What is the use of boldness if it leads to hunger and suffering?” asked Lagos-based trader Kazeem Olojo. “We need a leader who is bold but also compassionate and strategic.”

International Perspective

The Tinubu administration’s reforms have generally received strong endorsement from international financial institutions. The World Bank and IMF have commended the policies as “critical steps toward macroeconomic stability.”

However, they have also stressed the need for social protection programs to mitigate the effects on low-income households—an area where implementation has faced logistical and transparency challenges.

Historical Parallels

Ajiboye’s defense echoes justifications made for other reformist leaders globally who implemented painful short-term measures for promised long-term benefits. The key to historical vindication, analysts note, lies in whether the promised recovery—in the form of investment, growth, and improved living standards—materializes within a reasonable timeframe.

Looking Ahead

As President Tinubu’s administration approaches its second year, the debate over his reform agenda is set to intensify. The government’s ability to stabilize the economy, curb inflation, and demonstrate tangible improvements in livelihoods will ultimately determine how history judges this phase of “non-timid” policy-making.

Biodun Ajiboye’s statement has firmly framed the administration’s narrative: that Nigeria’s recovery requires a leader willing to make unpopular but necessary decisions. Whether the public accepts this narrative depends almost entirely on the results that follow.
