TODAY IN HISTORY

Today in Nigerian History – 19 July

Here are some notable events associated with 19 July in Nigeria:

1. 19 July 2006 – Lagos Building Collapse

A four-floor residential building collapsed overnight in Lagos, killing at least 24 people and trapping many others. The building, which was less than three years old, contained 36 apartments and several shops on the ground floor. Investigations pointed to poor construction standards as a major cause of the disaster. The tragedy renewed calls for stricter enforcement of Nigeria's building regulations.

British Prime Minister David Cameron paid an official visit to Nigeria during his African tour. He met with then-President Goodluck Jonathan in Lagos to discuss:

  • Trade and investment
  • Democratic governance
  • Security cooperation
  • Strengthening UK–Nigeria relations

The visit was cut short as Cameron returned to the UK to address the phone-hacking scandal involving British media.
