Politics is Insane: The Truce Between Wike, Fubara, and President Tinubu

The Rivers State political crisis, which has been ongoing for months, has finally seen a breakthrough. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule reached a truce after meeting with President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025. This development marks a significant step towards resolving the protracted dispute that led to a state of emergency in the state.

Background of the Crisis

The rift between Wike and Fubara began shortly after Fubara's inauguration as governor in May 2023. The two leaders had a falling out over control of the state's political structure, which eventually spilled over into the State House of Assembly. The situation escalated, prompting President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, suspending Governor Fubara and the State Assembly members for six months.

The Meeting and Truce

The meeting between President Tinubu, Wike, Fubara, and the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly was a crucial step towards reconciliation. Photos from the meeting show the parties smiling and shaking hands, indicating a breakthrough in efforts to resolve the crisis. Although details of the meeting are still emerging, it's clear that the truce is a positive development for the state.

Implications of the Truce

The truce between Wike and Fubara may have significant implications for the 2027 presidential election. President Tinubu's decision to intervene in the crisis could be seen as an attempt to solidify his power in Rivers State. With Wike's influence in the state, the president may be leaning towards working with the FCT minister to secure support for his second-term ambition.

Meanwhile social media have a leak of a purported agreement between the parties

Moving Forward

As the parties work towards implementing the truce, it's essential for them to prioritize the interests of the people of Rivers State. The state of emergency declaration and subsequent suspension of Governor Fubara and the State Assembly members had far-reaching consequences, including concerns about the rule of law and democracy. The truce offers an opportunity for the parties to put aside their differences and work towards a more stable and prosperous future for the state
