Abuja, Nigeria | January 23, 2026 – In a major development for Nigerian tertiary education financing, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has officially confirmed the disbursement of a colossal ₦1.33 Billion to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the ongoing academic session.


The fund, amounting to ₦1,326,550,000 (One Billion, Three Hundred and Twenty-Six Million, Five Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira), was successfully transferred to the university on January 19, 2026. This disbursement is part of the approved schedule for the 2025/2026 academic year under the federal government's student loan programme.


According to the official statement released by NELFUND, the disbursement is intended to cover tuition and associated fees for 6,308 eligible UNILAG students who have successfully met all the programme's requirements. The beneficiary list was generated from verified institutional data submitted during the rigorous application and validation process.


NELFUND Clarifies Process, Urges Seamless Registration


The Fund has moved to clarify the post-disbursement procedure, stating emphatically that once funds are released to an institution, affected students should encounter no delays in registering for their courses and accessing lectures.


NELFUND outlined its standard engagement protocol with tertiary institutions, which includes:


1. Proper reconciliation of the final beneficiary student lists.

2. Timely application of the disbursed funds to the accounts of all eligible students.

3. Clear communication to students to prevent the spread of misinformation and alleviate any unnecessary distress.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, commented on the disbursement, reinforcing the Fund's dedication to its core mandate.


“NELFUND remains fully committed to ensuring that approved student loan funds are disbursed promptly and applied appropriately. We are working closely with all partner institutions to resolve any administrative gaps and to ensure that no eligible student is disadvantaged,” Mr. Sawyerr stated.
